CANTILAN: Your Next Surfing Destination

It was June 28, 2008 when me and my friends took time to go to San Pedro and went swimming. Getting lazy after that tedious activity, we paddled on top of our surfboards under the heat of the sun and above the friendly sea while chatting. It is still fresh in my mind what transpired during that ordinary day. One of the villagers there named Delma Mangampo invited us to visit the nature park located at the tail-end of Baybay beach in Brgy. San Pedro, Cantilan. She told us that the area was ideal for surfing. Out of curiosity, we were interested and Delma drove us to that place. The waves that time were not as that big though like that of the famous Cloud 9 in Siargao Island, but somehow it has good line up. It was a lefthander where you can have a 200-meter ride more or less. I was hesitant to try the waves so I let my companions Andrew Tubaon and Gringgo Anthony Urbiztondo to do first the try. Since then, we frequented the area and named it LG Spot. Perhaps, we were the first to enjoy riding on those waves there. (left inset photo: The LG Spot in Brgy. San Perdro, Cantilan)
Later that month until September, the waves were not vast so we preferred to go to Lanuza because it was known for its huge waves where we can really feel the adrenalin and our hearts pump out.
However, it was not practical anymore if we go there often because our means sometimes is not enough. We thought it was about time to explore for another area which will not cost us much. We went to Baluarte looking for the perfect location. We also tried our luck near Onion area. Fortunately, we sighted a portion where surfing could best fit. There are big waves though but it was way too far. We visited the area time and again and each time we went there the waves just grew bigger and bigger but it was a close out type and not suitable for surfing anymore. Almost frustrated, we again looked for another site in Baluarte area where surfing would be possible. We bumped with some skimboarders and they revealed to us that an area at the Parola would satisfy our hunger for the waves. It was a lefthander again, but by that time they were not that huge.
We went to the place almost everyday until one dark morning me and Gringgo thought of organizing a surfing tournament in December, anticipating by that time the waves would rise. Ours was only for fun, invite some friends and compete. Moreso, it was a kind of telling everyone that ‘hey’ we have our own surfing area too. Considering the years that passed, it was a long time ago and not knowing Cantilan has perfect site for surfing. Cantilan is truly blessed.
During the first week of November, we gathered some ideas and asked advices from our friends in Lanuza on how to run a surfing competition. We have no experience at all on how these things should be done save for riding on the waves. Driven by that desire to host a surfing competition, we begun asking for financial support, started hiring and choosing the better if not the best judges. We invited local competitors from different places, we advertised the competition, we had posters and everything in preparation for the event. We doubled our time, effort and energy because only the two of us were working on that and it was no easy job. It was all our sweat. We sometimes thought of quitting and canceling the competition. But we did go on anyway. The competition was finalized and unveiled on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of December 2008.
Three days from the date of the event, we changed venue, from Baluarte to LG Spot in Brgy. San Pedro because on those days the waves are relatively bigger and the location was more desirable because it has cottages where spectators and participants can take shelter. There was no power line though. A day before the event, Competitors from Siargao and Lanuza arrived and we accommodated them. A foreigner in Brgy.San Pedro also approached us and offered his house for the guests and so that is where the participants from Lanuza was temporarily sheltered. We housed the rest of the competitors in our own residences to lessen the expenses.
The first day was for registration. Almost thirty surfers inked their willingness to participate. On the second day, the competition started. The waves were smaller, 2 feet face and the largest set was only 4 feet face. Ironically, it grew bigger only after the competition. It was overhead. On the 3rd day were the finals. The guys from Siargao were the ones who compete for the senior’s division. For the junior’s division, they were all from Lanuza. Sad to say, no one from Cantilan has ever reached that portion of the competition. Bonifacio Figuron from Siargao won the seniors category. He received P6,000 as cash prize plus trophy and a gift from us, the organizers. In the juniors category, Philip Jade Apareja of Lanuza was named the champion and received a cash prize of P3,000 plus trophy and gift from the organizers. The rest of the runners-up received cash gift too, trophy and event t-shirt. (left inset photo: Gringgo entertains a foreign visitor who were present during the event.)
There were less spectators during the competition considering it was the first in Cantilan and the range of information was limited. There was an activity also at the Municipal proper. On the last day of the competition which was December 7th was Manny Pacquiao’s historic battle against another boxing legend in the name of Oscar dela Hoya. Perhaps those who supposed to witness the surfing competition chose to watch the boxing event. Nonetheless, we were happy because there were surfers who really came to show their skills and passion for the sport. We were thankful that nothing bad happened during the competition, it was smooth-sailing. We were grateful for our sponsors and to all the people who gave their support. December 7 was so historic. Aside from Manny Pacquiao’s victory in boxing, it was victory also for local sport in the Municipality of Cantilan because a surfing competition was held and it was the first ever in the place. I can say that the event was successful because we were able to facilitate the event despite the less time for preparation and the limited resources. But due to our determination and love for the sport we made history in our own municipality and realized which was once a dream of having a surfing competition on our waters.
